Vasco da Gama came across the country and explored it way back in 1498. Later it was colonized by Portugal and from the turn of the 16th century Portuguese trading posts in Mozambique became important trade and refreshment points along the new route to the east.
With Independence from colonial rule in 1975 there were large waves of emigration by whites and the economy came to depend heavily on South Africa. Severe drought and prolonged civil war saw the country struggling to develop, but fighting finally came to an end with a UN negotiated peace agreement in 1992. Fifteen years later, in 2007, things are looking much more promising for the people of Mozambique.
Although the influences of Islamic traders and the European colonizers are undeniable, the people of Mozambique have retained much of their culture, which is based around small scale agriculture. Visitors often leave with wooden sculptures which are made especially in the north. With over 500 years of Portuguese influence, Mozambique naturally falls within the community of Portuguese speaking countries. The middle and upper class in Mozambique are more heavily influenced by the Portuguese heritage.
