BAZARUTO ISLAND - BAZARUTO ARCHIPELAGO
Easy to get to by boat or plane from Vilanculos, Bazaruto Island is the largest island in the archipelago, at 37km long and 7km wide it offers outstanding stretches of white sand. Fresh water lakes attract of water birds, including flamingos, who all have too watch out for the crocodiles! The island is very much an up market affair and accommodation is costly, but it is a wonderful place!
CENTRAL MARKET - MAPUTO
Situated on Av. 25 de Setembro, in the heart of Maputo; the market sells everything from basketware and carvings, fruit and vegetables and seafood as well as many day to day items. Pickpockets are a problem here and visitors should just use common sense and not flaunt wealth.
INHACA ISLAND
Situated about 40km off the coast of Maputo, Inhaca Island is famous for its beautiful beaches, coral reefs, marine biology museum and areas of protected forest. Snorkel around the shipwrecks and reefs at Santa Maria. Take the daily ferry service form Maputo.
PANGANE PENINSULA
Situated in the Cabo Delgado province, 200km from the border with Tanzania, the sea washes against the sides of the narrow peninsula. Buy some seafood from the locals in the small fishing community. Why not camp out under the stars?
SAN SEBASTIAO
The Fort of San Sebastiao was once reputed to be the largest building in the Southern Hemisphere. The fort dominates the tip of Ihla de Mocambique, and was built between 1558 and 1620 of limestone shipped in from Potugal.
