Formerly know as Sao Martinho; Bilene is a tranquil village 180km north of Maputo. Situated on the Uembje Lagoon, which is a huge stretch of water about 8km wide and 27km long, and reaches depths of 50 meters. The shores are shallow and are ringed by beautiful white sandy beaches with rolling sand dunes and tropical lush vegetation.
‘Warm People, Cold Beer’ is the Motto for the rustic, eco-friendly resort of Praia does Sol, which is situated on the south shore of this beautiful Lagoon, a mere 2km from town.
The accommodation is either A-frames for 1 or 2 persons, or the larger family chalets, which are built into the hillside and offer spectacular views of the lagoon. All the chalets have mosquito nets, fans, coffee facilities and en-suite shower and toilet. The construction is local wood, reed and thatch, with shade cloth to allow the free flow of tropical air through the rooms.
The vegetation around the lodge and chalets is abundant and leads to prolific bird life. Sit on your deck and watch out for the flash of red wings as a Loerie flies by, listen for the soft call of the Rain Bird or Burchells Coucal. See if you can identify some birds not on the Bird List at the bar. We also have squirrels bounding around and if you are very lucky you may get to see our genet!
All rates include dinner, bed and breakfast. Our restaurant overlooks the lagoon and is relaxed and laid back. Fresh fruit of the area, cereals, fresh muffins hot from the oven and cooked breakfasts are served from 7am to whenever. We have an a la carte menu for lunch with a variety of Mozambican favorites such as prawns, crab curry, prego rolls and fresh fish. Dinner is a set 3-course dinner or buffet that varies every evening. We pride ourselves on our food. Provisions are made for vegetarians and halaal.
Adjoining the restaurant is our bar. We stock the local beer, spirits, wine, cool drinks and have a selection of exotic cocktails. There is a TV and dartboard, so it is the social hub to meet new friends, chat, relax, and have a dip in our cool pool while sipping on sundowners.
The Lagoon lends itself to water sports, so bring the boat and jet-ski. Swimming is safe due to the shallowness of the lagoon and the water is always warm. A Barge is available to take you across the Lagoon to the ocean Beach, where there is safe snorkeling and depending on the season you can see whales and turtles in the Ocean. We also have canoes for the more energetic and fishing rods for hire. Booze cruises in the late afternoon are a must to watch the sun go down on another perfect day in our little piece of paradise.
Praia do Sol is an idyllic spot to get away from the stresses of the city. A perfect place to relax and unwind, with no 4x4 necessary to get there, it makes it easily accessible and is only 3 hours from Komatiepoort, and when you get to Bilene, there is always a Cold Beer and a Warm Welcome waiting for you at Praia do Sol.
